MORI (2021)
works on paper made with soot, ash, charcoal, found objects
the forest sighs, the branches tremble
a silent path through frozen meadow—
Death, she follows, softly singing
works on paper made with soot, ash, charcoal, found objects
Created using ash, soot, and charcoal, these drawings reflect on the concepts of loss and grief, and serve as a visual mediation or 'tether' to those who have passed. The title of the series, mori, refers dually to the Latin word for death (as in ‘memento mori’), but also to the Japanese word for forest.
When exhibited in a solo show in 2021, the works were accompanied by a poem I wrote:
water rises and ashes settlethe forest sighs, the branches tremble
a silent path through frozen meadow—
Death, she follows, softly singing
